Arabica vs Robusta: What’s the Difference And Which Tastes Better?

Posted by Byron Bay Coffee Co on

When it comes to choosing your daily brew, the type of coffee bean in your cup makes a bigger difference than most people realise. The two main varieties - Arabica and Robusta - each bring their own characteristics to the table in terms of flavour, caffeine content, origin and growing conditions.

At Byron Bay Coffee Co, we choose to roast and serve 100% Arabica beans across all of our blends and single origin coffees. That said, it ultimately comes down to your personal taste. Some coffee drinkers genuinely enjoy the bold punch of Robusta or blends that incorporate it. Here's what makes each bean unique and how to decide which one might suit your palate best.

What’s the difference between Arabica and Robusta beans?

Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora) are the two most commonly cultivated coffee species, together making up over 95% of global coffee production.

  • Arabica accounts for roughly 60–70% of the world’s coffee.

  • Robusta makes up around 30–40%, mainly grown in Vietnam, Brazil, India and parts of Africa.

Arabica is typically grown at higher altitudes with more delicate farming conditions, while Robusta thrives in lower altitudes and is more resistant to pests and disease.

Arabica coffee: smooth, sweet & specialty-grade

Arabica beans are known for their refined flavour, higher acidity and a broad range of tasting notes. Think chocolate, fruit, florals and citrus.

These beans are grown in regions like Colombia, Ethiopia, Brazil, Honduras and Costa Rica, often at elevations above 1,000 meters.

Arabica requires more care in cultivation, but its complexity and balance make it the top choice for specialty coffee roasters around the world. That’s why all our coffees, from organic blends to our decaf range, are crafted exclusively with Arabica.

Robusta coffee: bold, strong & widely used

Robusta beans contain more caffeine (about double that of Arabica) and produce a brew that’s stronger, earthier and often more bitter. You’ll find Robusta widely grown in countries like Vietnam, India, Indonesia and Uganda.

It’s often used in:

  • Instant coffee

  • Commercial supermarket blends

  • Traditional Italian espresso blends (for a thicker crema and stronger bite)

While Robusta lacks the flavour complexity of Arabica, it can bring intensity and depth when blended well. In fact, many espresso lovers appreciate blends that include a percentage of high-quality Robusta for that extra body and crema.

Key differences at a glance

Feature Arabica Robusta
Flavour Smooth, sweet Bitter, earthy
Caffeine ~1.2% ~2.2%
Acidity Bright Low
Cost Higher Lower
Growing Altitude High Low
Common Use Specialty coffee Instant & mass blends

Bean size and shape difference

Arabica beans are typically larger and more oval-shaped, with a curved crease, while Robusta beans are smaller and rounder, with a straighter line through the middle. These physical traits aren’t just cosmetic; they’re linked to the internal structure and density of the beans, which in turn influence how they roast and brew.

About taste preference

While we firmly believe in the quality, sustainability and superior flavour of Arabica beans, we also understand that coffee is highly subjective. Some people prefer the strong, punchy flavour of Robusta; especially in espresso. Others enjoy the smooth, balanced profile of Arabica that shines when brewed black or with milk.

It’s also worth noting that many large-scale roasters use Arabica-Robusta blends to create coffees that are full-bodied, budget-friendly and appeal to a wider audience. These blends, when crafted well, can absolutely suit a variety of palates.

Why we choose 100% Arabica

At Byron Bay Coffee Co, our focus is on small-batch roasting, flavour complexity and working with producers who grow coffee using sustainable and ethical practices. Arabica beans allow us to maintain this level of quality control and consistency across every product we offer.

In a nutshell

What’s the biggest difference between Arabica and Robusta?
Arabica has a smoother, more complex flavor, while Robusta is stronger, more bitter, and higher in caffeine.

Is Arabica better than Robusta?
Not necessarily. Arabica is often considered superior in quality and flavour, but Robusta has its place in certain blends and for those who prefer a stronger brew.

Why is Arabica more expensive?
It’s harder to grow and more delicate, but worth it for the taste.
